Northern Lights Astronomy Festival

An amazing adventure of discovery and exploration into Our Night Sky.

 

The NLAF is focused on bringing amatuer astronomers,  educators and the general public together from around the nation to share their interests with  the local community, and  to develop an understanding of the night sky and a love for the stars.

This 4 Night and 3 Day event will highlight the pristine beauty of the Northwoods and dark skies that Northern Wisconsin has to offer. Because we are so far North the possibility of seeing the Northen Lights are great!

 

Cost for the NLAF is $50pp(pre-registered before the day of event) or $100 on day of event: ADULTS or kids 8 +.

Includes campsite. Limit of 6 persons to 1 campsite, and 1 vehicle allowed on site at all times.  Additional parking available near site.

 

Observing         Registration Form

 

There will be two obseving fields all will be centrally located to the facilities.  No cars will be allowed in the center of field, but you may set up your car and telescope around the perimeter of the field.  Several cement pads will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  NO WHITE LIGHT OF ANY TYPE WILL BE ALLOWED ON OR NEAR OBSERVING FIELD AFTER THE 9 PM DARK OUT!  All vehicles must be parked for the night after DARK OUT .  No driving at all allowed on the grounds after dark out, if you know you will need to leave after DARK please park your car in the designated parking lot.  Except by HHNLAF staff!

 

Registration & Camping    Registration Form

 

Registration fee includes campsite (non-refundable). There is a limit to 200 available campsites, they fill up early so make sure to get your registration in ASAP! Campsites are primitive and rustic, there are no picnic tables, fire rings or electricity on any campsite, so please plan accordingly.  No RV's will be allowed to camp at NLAF (most roads are un-developed and not suitable for BIG rigs, 5th Wheelers, or pull behinds: except those of pop up campers) a local RV campground will facilitate your needs.

POP UP campers allowed but remember"there is no electric, water or hook ups of any kind available on  camp sites". 

Limit of 6 persons per campsite, includes children & one vehicle. 

Showers, toilets and Port-A-Potty's will be availabe through out the grounds.

Thursday

Arrival of campers after 12 noon, check in and camp set-up

9 pm - Daybreak: DARK OUT!!!! No car travel, no white lights, no flash photography, no flashlights (unless covered with RED film or nail polish) & NO CAMP FIRES

 

Friday

7-9 am Breakfast (Free donuts, coffee, juice or tea)

Purchase telescopes, eyepieces, maps, books and charts at our vendors area on Friday and Saturday.

11:30 -1:30 pm:

5:15-6:30:

9 pm - Daybreak: DARK OUT!!!! No car travel, no white lights, no flash photography, no flashlights (unless covered with RED film or nail polish) & NO CAMP FIRES

10 pm - All Night Sci-Fi film festival

Open observing until ????????????????

 

Saturday

7-9 am Breakfast (Free donuts, coffee, juice or tea)

Activities for kids start at noon. Star finders, Sun dials, Create a constellation, Solar System walk & Moon masks. Solar Viewing, face painting.

11:30 -1:30 pm:

1:45- 3:15: Telescope Workshop- Making a solar filter for your telescope or binoculars, this fee based class ($20 per person) will take you through the necessary steps to make your own solar filter using Baader Film.  (Class limited to 40 people.  Must pre-registar before class begins)

3:30 - 5 pm: Our Solar System: Led by a member of the STARS Foundation, they will guide through this exploration of our Solar System in this inter-active and informative lecture & slide show.

5:15-6:30:

7-8 pm- Local Astronomer Talk

8-9 pm  Door Prize Drawing

9 pm - Daybreak: DARK OUT!!!! No car travel, no white lights, no flash photography, no flashlights (unless covered with RED film or nail polish) & NO CAMP FIRES

10 pm - All Night Sci-Fi film festival

Open observing until ???????????????

 

Sunday

6-7:30 am Breakfast (Free donuts, coffee, juice or tea)

7:30-11 am: Check out & departure.
